Advanced version of BrahMos missile test-fired

An advanced version of the Indo-Russian supersonic cruise missile BrahMos was successfully test-fired from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur on the Odisha coast on Tuesday.
The developmental launch, in steep-dive mode for precision attack against targets behind mountain ridges, was carried out using a mobile autonomous launcher prepared by the third BrahMos regiment of the Army.
The flight-test of the missile, with a range of 290 km, was significant in that it validated the all-new indigenous software algorithm, resulting in “pinpoint accuracy against hidden land targets.”
The two-stage missile is capable of delivering a conventional warhead of 200-300 kg.
A. Sivathanu Pillai, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of BrahMos Aerospace, said the missile flew at Mach 2.8 in a textbook launch yielding cent per cent results.

devsyni-ekadashi

India's GDP grows under 5% for 2nd year running

The Indian economy grew by 4.7% in 2013-14 — the second successive year of sub-5% growth — data released on Friday showed. This presents the Narendra Modi-led government with the daunting challenge of cooling prices and pushing growth with the added hurdle of a possibly deficient monsoon.
Although less than a week old in office, time is ticking for the new government to fulfill its electoral promise of ‘Aache din aane wale hain (good days are ahead)’ because the PM needs to spin jobs for tens of millions of hopefuls. However, the elbow room in the treasury remains extraordinarily tight in the coming budget in the backdrop of high inflation and borrowing rates.
India’s gross domestic product (GDP) — a measure of the value of goods and services produced in the country — had grown 4.5% in 2012-13 and the government had forecast in February that the economy would grow by 4.9% in 2013-14.
In seven of the last eight quarters, India’s GDP has grown at less than 5% — hit by a toxic mix of high inflation, costly loan rates and poor services and industrial sector growth.
A good monsoon pushed agriculture growth to 4.7% during the year while total foodgrain production rose nearly 3%.
“However, current climate forecasts indicate increased likelihood of a deficient monsoon in 2014-15  that could affect farm production,” Crisil, a credit rating and research firm, said in a report on Friday.
Elevated prices have hurt family budgets hard, especially at a time when thousands of firms have offered meagre salary hikes and are holding back expansion and hiring.
Besides, high inflation has prompted the Reserve Bank to raise lending rates. Your EMIs are unlikely to fall and high borrowing costs have dampened purchases of cars and other consumer goods, which are mostly bought through loans.
High inflation and weak income prospects have dented consumer sentiments. Investment growth fell 0.4% during October to March and remained flat for the full year.

Construction continued to register another year of low growth at 1.6%, owing to low levels of infrastructure activity, but analysts expect investment to pick up.

“There is a wave of optimism in the economy after the 10-point plan charted out by the PM, which focuses most visibly on investments in infrastructure, time-bound action and improved coordination between the Centre and states to ensure smooth implementation of new government’s policies,” Madan Sabnavis, chief economist at credit rating and research firm CARE, said.

world universe was hotter than sun

Current Affairs-Malavath Purna becomes youngest girl to reach Everest peak

HYDERABAD: In a historic feat for Indian mountaineering, 13-year-old Malavath Purna on Saturday became the youngest female climber to scale the Mount Everest.

Purna was accompanied by Sadhanapalli Anand Kumar (16), a Class IX student from the Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh, and completed the feat this morning.

Anand and Purna are both students of Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Educational Society.

"They climbed Everest at 6am today after a 52-day long expedition," he said.

"Purna created a record by becoming by youngest girl to climb the Everest," he said.

Anandiben Patel to be the new CM of Gujarat

India far from achieving sanitation goal: WHO report

New Delhi: Although India is on track to meet its millennium development goal for safe drinking water with 93% of the population having access to an improved source of water, it is far from achieving its target for improved sanitation facilities with 792 million people still living without access to improved sanitation facilities in 2012, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in a report released on Thursday.
The 2014 progress update report by the WHO said two billion people around the world have gained access to improved sources of drinking water since 1990, but also that 2.5 billion do not have access to improved sanitation facilities.
According to the report, India still accounts for the highest number of people who defecate in the open, 597 million.
Unicef has launched a public campaign (named Poo2Loo), featuring an animated lump of excreta, Mr Poo, to make people aware of the health hazards of open defecation.
According to the WHO report, despite progress, sharp geographic, socio-cultural, and economic inequalities in access to improved drinking water and sanitation facilities still persist around the world.
“The vast majority of those without improved sanitation are poorer people living in rural areas. Progress on rural sanitation—where it has occurred—has primarily benefited richer people, increasing inequalities,” said Maria Neira, WHO director for public health, environmental and social determinants of health, in a press statement on Thursday.
The report showed that with a 25% increase in population with access to safe drinking water since 2000, India is now on track to meet its millennium development goal for drinking water access. Worldwide, by the end of 2012, 89% of the global population used improved drinking water sources, with 2.3 billion people gaining access to a good source of water in 22 years.
Improved sanitation is one of the targets under United Nations Millennium Development Goals, which were established in 2000 to improve the basic living conditions of the global populatio

Delhi's air among the dirtiest in world: WHO study

An effort by the World Health Organisation to measure pollution in cities around the world has found New Delhi admits to having the dirtiest air, while Beijing's measurements, like its skies, are far from clear.
The study of 1,600 cities found air pollution had worsened since a smaller survey in 2011, especially in poorer countries, putting city-dwellers at higher risk of cancer, stroke and heart disease.
Air pollution killed about seven million people in 2012, making it the world's single biggest environmental health risk, the WHO, a United Nations agency, said last month.
Thirteen of the dirtiest 20 cities were Indian, with New Delhi, Patna, Gwalior and Raipur in the top four spots. New Delhi had an annual average of 153 micrograms of small particulates, known as PM2.5, per cubic metre.
Beijing, notorious for the smog that has prompted some Anglophone residents to dub it "Greyjing", was in 77th place with a PM2.5 reading of 56, little over one-third of Delhi's pollution level.
WHO experts said the Chinese data was from 2010, the most recent year made available to them by China. But Beijing's city government began publishing hourly PM2.5 data in January 2012.
A year after it started publishing data, Beijing's air quality hit the "worst on record" according to Greenpeace, with a PM2.5 reading as high as 900 on one occasion.
Beijing's government said last month that PM2.5 concentrations stood at a daily average of 89.5 micrograms per cubic metre in 2013, 156 percent higher than national standards. Such a reading would put Beijing 17th in the WHO database. The WHO says there is no safe level for PM2.5 pollution.
At the cleaner end of the table, 32 cities reported a PM2.5 reading of less than 5. Three-quarters of those were Canadian, including Vancouver, one was Hafnarfjordur in Iceland and the other seven were American.
WHO experts insisted the survey was not intended to name and shame the dirtiest cities, since the cities involved were volunteering the information to try to help themselves clean up.

Maria Neira, WHO Director for Public Health, Environmental and Social Determinants of Health, said the aim was to "challenge" cities and thought the survey would help them to become more open about their dirty air, which is often caused by burning coal, smokestack industries and heavy traffic.
She rejected any suggestion that China might be cheating and said it was becoming much more sophisticated about collecting air pollution data, with a new push to clean up the big cities.
"We are very much discussing with China putting on the table the issue of air pollution. Our director general (Margaret Chan) was recently there and she declared that China was one of the countries with major problems with air pollution. We will continue discussions on that to make sure that relevant measures are in place to reduce air pollution."
HT had in January reported India had slipped 32 ranks in the global Environment Performance Index (EPI) 2014 to rank a lowly 155 and its capital Delhi had earned the dubious tag of being the world’s most polluted city.
A comparative study of 178 countries on nine environmental parameters released earlier this month by the US-based Yale University showed that one of the world’s fastest growing economies was a disaster on the environmental front.

What was worse, India’s pollution levels were believed to be playing havoc with the health of its citizens. “A bottom performer on nearly every policy issue included in the 2014 EPI, with the exception of forests, fisheries and water resources, India’s performance lags most notably in the protection of human health from environmental harm,” said a statement issued by Yale.

73% Indians from big cities on FB despite being under age 13

Notwithstanding the strict norms that prohibit children under age 13 years from opening an account on social networking site Facebook, a whopping 73 per cent kids aged between 8 and 13 from tier-I & tier-II cities in India are using the site, according to an Assocham survey.
The trend is dangerous as it can make children vulnerable to cyber bullying and online sexual abuse, the survey said.
“Minors lack the experience or judgement to use a social network and this raises the scary possibility of predators tracking down kids who reveal their age in an online chat, to cyber bullying and sexual abuse,” Chairman of Assocham Health Committee B K Rao said.
As per the survey findings, nearly 25 per cent kids aged 13 years, 22 per cent aged 11 and 15 per cent aged 10 are on Facebook, while 5 to 10 per cent kids aged 8 & 9 years are also active on the site.
Terming the statistics as “sad and shocking”, the survey found that majority of the parents help kids lie to get on Facebook, only to repent later as the kids become addicted to the social networking site.
In fact, 75 per cent parents are aware of their child signing up for the site, and 82 per cent out of these parents helped create the child’s account, it pointed out.
The survey was conducted on 4,200 parents of children aged between 8 years and 13 years in major metropolitan cities like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Pune, Lucknow and Dehradun, among others

Current Affairs-SC upholds validity of Right to Education Act

The Constitution Bench of Supreme Court of India on 6 May 2014 upheld the Constitutional validity of the Right to Education (RTE) Act provided in Articles 15(5) and 21-A provided in the Constitution of India. In its decision, the apex court said that the Act is not applied to unaided minority institutions.
The five-judge Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court in its decision also upheld the provisions of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009 and the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Rules, 2010.
The Constitutional bench was headed by the Chief Justice of India, RM Lodha and comprised of Justice AK Patnaik, Justice Dipak Misra, Justice SJ Mukhopadhaya and Justice Ibrahim Kalifulla.
Earlier, the three-judge Bench of Supreme Court upheld the Constitutional validity of the Act by a majority of 2:1 on 6 September 2010 in a case, Society for Unaided Private Schools of Rajasthan vs Union of India & Anr. Following the decision of the three-judge bench, the matter was sent to the Constitutional Bench to make a decision on the validity of Clause (5) of Article 15 with effect from 20 January 2006 and the validity of Article 21A of the Constitution inserted by the Constitution (Eighty-Sixth Amendment) Act, 2002 with effect from 01 April 2010.
Background
Clause (5) was inserted in Article 15 during the Constitution 93rd Amendment Act 2005. Under the Act, the States were given the power to make special provisions for members of the SCs, STs and socially and educationally backward classes to lay guidelines for admission to all educational institutions. The institutions included private unaided institutions except the minority institutions.
The Parliament enacted the right to education in 2009 to provide free and compulsory education to children between 6 and 14 years of age by inserting Article 21A.
The Act stated that any privately-managed unaided educational institutions have to admit 25 percent students of weaker sections

Current Affairs-Scientists developed World's First Solar Jet Fuel

Scientists on 29 April 2014 for the first time developed Solar Jet Fuel using Sunlight, water and carbon dioxide (Co2). The project called SOLAR-JET was funded by European Union (EU).

Solar-Jet project partners include the German Aerospace Center (DLR), ETH Zürich, Bauhaus Luftfahrt and Shell.

Researchers have for the first time successfully demonstrated the entire production chain for renewable kerosene, using concentrated light as a high-temperature energy source.

The process
In a first step concentrated simulating sunlight was used to convert carbon dioxide and water to synthesis gas (syngas) in a high-temperature solar reactor containing metal-oxide based materials. The syngas is a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The syngas was then converted into kerosene by Shell using the established Fischer-Tropsch process.

Fischer-Tropsch derived fuels are already certified and can be used by existing vehicles and aircraft without modifications of their engines or of fuel infrastructure.

About Solar Jet

The four-year SOLAR-JET project was launched in June 2011. The project received 2.2 million Euros from the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7).

The project is still at the experimental stage, with a glassful of jet fuel produced in laboratory conditions, using simulated sunlight. However, the results give hope that in future any liquid hydrocarbon fuels could be produced from sunlight, CO2 and water.

"I just tried to tell the story in the best way possible and when your attempts are recognised like this, it feels like a vindication.

'Shahid' was a challenging film and it was made at a time when the country is going through a deep polaristaion and at such times telling stories which address these issues directly is always a challenge," Mehta said.

Rao, who played the slain activist, said "I met Shahid's family and they organised a small party for my win. They were equally happy like the way I am."

Rao shared the best actor trophy with Suraj Venjaramoodu for Malayalam film 'Perariyathavar' which also won the award for being the best film on environment conservation.

"I am delighted to win the first national award of my career. National award has its own dignity and place. Unlike other awards, this one is not a commercial award. I didn't even know that my name was sent for it. It came to me as a soothing surprise," Shukla said.

'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag', a biopic on athlete Milkha Singh, won the award for the most popular film.

The producer and director of the film received a Swarna Kamal and Rs 2,00,000 each. 'Milkha' also won the best choreography award for Ganesh Acharya.
